Clobutinol hydrochloride is a prodrug that is metabolized to butamirate citrate and sodium citrate. It has been shown to inhibit the inflammatory response in experimental models of chronic bowel disease, as well as to reduce the symptoms of chronic cough. Clobutinol hydrochloride also inhibits the growth of bacteria that are resistant to antimicrobial agents, such as erythromycin and kanamycin. Clobutinol hydrochloride binds with high affinity to proteins in the body, which prevents its transmission into cells and causes it to be excreted from the body unchanged in urine. This drug also has antiviral properties against HIV infection, but not against herpes simplex virus or varicella-zoster virus. Clobutinol hydrochloride is used for the treatment of cardiac diseases and for antitussive purposes.
