Carboprost is a synthetic analogue of the natural hormone, oxytocin. It is used to induce labour and to control postpartum bleeding. Carboprost can be given by injection or by intravenous infusion. This drug has minimal toxicity and has been shown to be safe in combination therapy with other drugs for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Carboprost also has anti-inflammatory effects and can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis in some tissues, such as the bladder. In clinical studies involving women, this drug was found to have a statistically significant effect on inducing labour and controlling postpartum bleeding.
