1-Chloro-4-methylphthalazine is a chemical that has been used for decades as an experimental drug to treat heart tissue damage and death. It has been shown to be toxic to cardiac muscle cells and is thought to act by inhibiting the mitochondrial electron transport chain. 1-Chloro-4-methylphthalazine binds to cardiomyocytes and induces cell death by increasing the levels of reactive oxygen species. It may also induce apoptosis in some cells, which may lead to necrosis. The drug's therapeutic effects on damaged cardiac tissue are still being studied, but it appears to have potential as a treatment for infarcted heart tissue.
