1-Cyano-3-isopropylguanidine is an antimicrobial agent that is used in assays to detect piperidine. It can also be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of heterocycloalkyl compounds. The impurities found in 1-cyano-3-isopropylguanidine are hydrochloric acid and nitro, which can be removed by reductively decomposing the chloride with methylisothiourea. This compound can also react with phenoxy radicals to form a chlorinated product, which signifies the presence of impurities.
1Cyano-3-isopropylguanidine is used as a precursor to make antimalarial drugs such as primaquine and quinacrine, which are used in the treatment of malaria. These drugs are made by reacting this compound with hydrochloric acid or sodium chloride and then oxidizing it with nitric acid or potassium dichromate
