D-citrulline is a precursor in the urea cycle and can be synthesized from l-arginine. It has been shown to increase nitric oxide production, which may be due to its ability to regenerate nitric oxide synthase. D-citrulline has also been found to inhibit bacterial translocation in mice by reducing the levels of organic acids and fatty acids in the intestine. This drug may also have an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. D-Citrulline has been shown to increase protein synthesis and cardiac function in rats with myocardial infarction.
