4-Chloropyridine-2-carbonitrile is a compound that contains two isomers. It can exist in three orientations: cis, trans, and gauche. The orientation of the molecule is determined by the double bond between C4 and C5. This compound has shown antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis. 4-Chloropyridine-2-carbonitrile inhibits the growth of mycobacteria by inhibiting their lipase enzyme, which causes them to accumulate cell membrane lipids. This leads to an increase in permeability and cell death. 4-Chloropyridine-2-carbonitrile also has reactive functionalities that allow it to react with chlorine, which increases its stability in organic solvents.
