Colestipol HCl is a drug that belongs to the group of combination therapy. It has low potency and can produce drug interactions with other drugs, such as those in the infectious diseases group. Colestipol HCl has been shown to lower cholesterol levels in experimental models. The drug also has a low risk of toxicity and side-effects, which are mainly associated with bowel disease or metabolic disorders. Colestipol HCl lowers LDL-cholesterol levels by interfering with the absorption of bile acids from the intestines, preventing them from being reabsorbed back into the body. This leads to an increase in bile acid excretion into feces and consequently reduces blood cholesterol levels.
Colestipol is a non-absorbed lipid-lowering agent that lowers serum cholesterol by inhibiting the reabsorption of bile acids in the intestine, thereby increasing their excretion into feces. In addition, colestipol may decrease intestinal absorption of cholesterol and other lip
