5-Chlorothiophene-2-sulfonamide is a potent inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase. It has been shown to have inhibitory properties in the human serum and to inhibit the activity of carbonic anhydrase in molecular modelling studies. 5-Chlorothiophene-2-sulfonamide has also been tested in clinical trials, but was found to have low potency as a drug. The molecule has been shown to be stable when exposed to light and air, but will decompose when heated or dissolved in organic solvents.5-Chlorothiophene-2-sulfonamide is an intramolecular hydrogen bond acceptor that forms a hydrogen bond with the nitrogen atom at position 2 on the pyrazole ring, which is substituted by two benzyl groups. This compound also contains a carboxylic acid group and two ethyl esters on its side chains.
