2-Cyano-5-methoxytoluene is a benzonitrile with a chemical formula CHClCN. This compound is used in the synthesis of drugs, dyestuffs and perfumes. The dehydration reaction is a chemical reaction that removes water from a molecule. Hydration is the opposite reaction, where water is added to a molecule. In anhydrous conditions, 2-cyano-5-methoxytoluene has been found to react with hydrogen peroxide, forming dehydrated molecules of acid complexes that contain chloride and trifluoride. This compound also reacts with leucinamide to form an amide and peroxide. Model studies have shown that 2-cyano-5-methoxytoluene can be synthesized under synthetically controlled conditions by combining 2 cyanoacetates with methoxyacetonitrile and ammonia hydroxide in an aluminium reactor at 140°C for 6 hours.
