N-Chlorophthalimide is a chlorinating agent that is used to prepare organic compounds with the addition of chlorine. It reacts with amines and other nitrogen-containing compounds to form chloroamines, which are industrial chemicals. The chemical also has ophthalmic properties, and can be used as a drug for eye conditions. In addition to its use in pharmaceuticals, N-chlorophthalimide is an important reagent in the manufacture of dyes, herbicides, and pesticides. It is also used as a solvent for polyvinyl chloride plastics.
