3-Cyano-2-fluoropyridine is a nucleophilic compound that inhibits integrase, an enzyme involved in the integration of viral DNA into the host genome. The physicochemical properties of 3-cyano-2-fluoropyridine have been characterized by chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Skov3 cells treated with 3-cyano-2-fluoropyridine showed a decrease in HIV replication and gene expression. Molecular modeling studies have shown that 3-cyano-2-fluoropyridine has a diazepine pharmacophore, which may be responsible for its anti HIV activity. This compound can be synthesized from readily available starting materials and is scalable to large scale synthesis. The reaction yields are high and optimization efforts have led to increased potency without affecting safety or tolerability.
