(R)-2-Chloro-1-(4-fluorophenyl)ethanol is a high activity, carbonyl, high yield, optimal condition, optimal reaction, alcohols. It has been synthesized for the first time in a one-step synthesis from ethyl 2-bromoacetate and 4-fluoroaniline. This product has been used to resolve racemic (R)-2-chloro-1-(4-fluorophenyl)ethanol with an enantiomeric excess of 98% at 0.5 M in pyridine. The (R)-enantiomer is selective for the alpha adrenergic receptor over the beta adrenergic receptor. The strain of yeast cerevisiae was also optimized for this reaction condition to produce an optical purity of 99%.
