It has been used as an alternative to the herbicide 2,4-D for weed control in crops. 2,4-D is a phenoxy herbicide that contains a phenylmethyl group and has been linked to damage of human health and the environment. The methyl ester side chain of 2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-5-thiazolecarboxylic acid allows it to be taken up by plants through their roots and leaves, protecting them from other environmental stresses such as drought or heat.
