8-Hydroxyquinoline-4-carboxylic acid is a hydrophilized compound that is an isomeric mixture of two tautomers. It has antiviral activity and can be used as a corrosion inhibitor in oil wells. It also has modulating effects on the activation of CFTR, which are related to its function as an acid molecule. 8-Hydroxyquinoline-4-carboxylic acid has been shown to potentiate sulfoxides and increase their pharmacokinetic properties. This effect may be due to the formation of an ion pair between the sulfoxide and 8-hydroxyquinoline, leading to increased urinary excretion of the sulfoxide.
