2,6-Difluorobenzyl alcohol is a redox agent that has a hydrogen sulfate group and a chloride group. It has electron-donating properties, which enables it to be used as an oxidizing or reducing agent in the synthesis of organic compounds. 2,6-Difluorobenzyl alcohol is synthesized from 2,6-difluoroanisole and methanol with ammonolysis. The product is purified by recrystallization in an organic solvent. 2,6-Difluorobenzyl alcohol can also react with chlorine gas to form hydrogen chloride and ammonium chloride. This reaction system may be used for the production of other chemicals such as chloroacetic acid and chloral hydrate.
