The inhibitory effect of 5-(2,2-difluoroethenyl)-1-[(2R,4S,5R)-4-hydroxy-5-(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]pyrimidine-2,4-dione (AFX) on the proliferation of cells in culture was studied. AFX inhibited cell proliferation by inhibiting the kinase gene and reducing the rate of DNA synthesis. Acyclovir is a drug that is used to treat herpes simplex virus infections and other viral diseases such as chickenpox and shingles. It has been shown to be effective against a variety of viruses including HIV, influenza virus, hepatitis B virus, and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The mechanism of action for acyclovir is inhibition of viral DNA polymerase.
