2,2-Difluoro-2-[1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-2-[1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-2-(trifluoromethoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy]-ethanol (DFTE) is a fluorescent compound that emits light with a maximum wavelength of 513 nm when excited with ultraviolet light. DFTE is an hydroxy group and hydroxyl group that has the ability to form esters and ethers. It also has methoxy groups on the 2 and 6 positions of the phenyl ring as well as two ethylene (C=C) bonds. DFTE absorbs at 265 nm in the infrared spectrum. The matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) technique can be used to identify DFTE by its molecular weight.
