Puerarin is a natural compound extracted from the root of the Pueraria lobata plant. It has been shown to have anti-depressive and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as a synergic effect with other drugs in treating cardiac and autoimmune diseases. In animal studies, puerarin has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The mechanism of action of puerarin is not fully understood; however, it may be related to its ability to inhibit the activity of monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes and affect serotonin levels in the brain.
