4,6-Dimethylpyrimidine is an organic compound with the chemical formula CHN. It belongs to the group of quaternary ammonium salts and has a helical structure. The methyl groups in this molecule are responsible for its optical absorption properties and reactivity towards nucleophiles. 4,6-Dimethylpyrimidine can be used as a sensor for light or as a fluorescent dye. In addition, it can be used as a ligand to form complexes with metals such as copper and silver. The fluorescence emission spectrum of this compound is blue shifted in comparison to that of the ground state due to the presence of an active methylene group which enhances the fluorescence.
