2-(Dimethylamino)propanoic acid is a heterocyclic compound. It is used in animal tissues, animal feed, and as a preservative in pharmaceuticals. 2-(Dimethylamino)propanoic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the factor receptor, which prevents the activation of the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. This results in decreased synthesis of ribosomal proteins and decreased translation of mRNA into protein. 2-(Dimethylamino)propanoic acid also has properties that are similar to polyethylene glycols and hydrogen fluoride that may be useful for organic synthesis or sterilization.
2-(Dimethylamino)propanoic acid also binds to aluminium and inhibits growth of stannous octoate (SnO). The optical microscope can be used to measure average particle diameter, which ranges from 0.5-1 micrometres for this compound.
