2,4-Diamino-5-pyrimidinemethanol is an antibacterial agent that is a synthetic compound. It has high specificity for gram-positive bacteria and quinolinylmethyl groups. 2,4-Diamino-5-pyrimidinemethanol is active against gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting the enzyme bacterial enzyme that synthesizes bacterial cell walls. 2,4-Diamino-5-pyrimidinemethanol also inhibits the growth of gram negative organisms by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins needed for cell wall biosynthesis. This drug has been shown to be active against a wide range of gram positive and gram negative organisms. The protonation of the phenolic group in 2,4-diamino-5 pyrimidinemethanol leads to its acidity and consequently its ability to inhibit bacterial growth at low pH levels.
