4-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid hydrochloride is a photoinduced molecule that reacts with oxygen and light to form a dimer. It is a colorless solid that can be photochemically decomposed in the presence of micelles or cationic surfactants. The dimerization reaction occurs when 4-(dimethylamino)butanoic acid hydrochloride absorbs UV irradiation, which causes the release of hydrogen chloride. 4-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid hydrochloride has been shown to be an efficient magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent for MRI.
