- diethyl ester
Diethyl (2-methylpropylidene)malonate is a chemical compound that can be synthesized by the reaction of malonic acid and ethylene glycol in the presence of an acid catalyst. Diethyl (2-methylpropylidene)malonate is an analogously shaped molecule to isobutyraldehyde, and it has been shown to have similar ring-opening reactions. The ring-opening reaction begins with the attack of a nucleophile on the carbon adjacent to the carbonyl group, leading to a stereoselective product. Diethyl (2-methylpropylidene)malonate has been shown to react with chloral and cyclopropanes, which are both active compounds. This compound also reacts with cyclopropenes, which are stereoselectively produced from diethyl (2-methylpropylidene)malonate.
