It is a colorless liquid that has a sweet odor. 1,3-Dichloro-5-methylbenzene is produced by the reaction of benzene with chlorine atoms in the presence of molybdenum as a catalyst. The product mixture consists primarily of two structural isomers: 1,2-dichloro and 1,3-dichloro. The two isomers are separated by fractional distillation or crystallization. 1,3-Dichloro-5-methylbenzene has been shown to be an intermediate for the production of volatile fatty acids, which are used in the food industry and in the production of pharmaceuticals and fragrances. 1,3-Dichloro -5 methylbenzene also reacts with chloride ions from fatty acids
