2,4-Dibromobutanoic acid methyl ester is a chiral compound that is used in the synthesis of heterocyclic amines. 2,4-Dibromobutanoic acid methyl ester reacts with amino acids or ammonia at room temperature to form an enantiopure product. The reaction is catalyzed by metal carbonates and yields a 1:1 mixture of diastereoisomers. This process can be carried out on a large scale to produce an enantiopure mixture. 2,4-Dibromobutanoic acid methyl ester can also be used in the synthesis of drugs for treatment of cancer and other diseases such as kinase selectivity.
2,4-Dibromobutanoic acid methyl ester has been shown to have effects on humans and animals, but not plants or bacteria. Humans are exposed to this chemical through inhalation of contaminated air or skin contact with contaminated soil or water
