3,5-Dichlorobenzenesulfonamide is a drug that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the dihydropteroate synthase enzyme and blocking the synthesis of folic acid. This drug has been shown to be active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other drug-resistant bacteria. 3,5-Dichlorobenzenesulfonamide is an analog of sulfa drugs, which are also used in the treatment of staphylococcal infections. It is not active against Enterococcus faecium and Streptococcus pneumoniae, two types of bacteria that are resistant to sulfa drugs. 3,5-Dichlorobenzenesulfonamide binds to the vancomycin resistance protein (VANR) as well as other bacterial proteins with high affinity.
