Diethylgermanium dichloride is an inorganic solid catalyst that can be used for the polymerization of halides and halogen compounds. It is also used as a polymerization initiator to produce polymers, such as polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and polychloroprene. Diethylgermanium dichloride has been shown to have a thermal expansion coefficient of 3.5 x 10-6/°C, which is higher than that of many other catalysts. This material has also been studied using 13C NMR spectroscopy, which can be used to identify the chemical structure of molecules. The most common use for this material is in the production of biphenyls.
