2,2'-Dinitrodiphenylamine is a metastable molecule with a molecular weight of 222. It has an amide bond, two methyl groups, and two hydrogen atoms. The molecular ion peak at m/z = 222 corresponds to the loss of one hydrogen atom from the nitro group. The asymmetric unit contains one ligand (nitrate) and one molecule of 2,2'-dinitrodiphenylamine. This compound is kinetic and its conformational equilibrium is determined by the methyl groups. 2,2'-Dinitrodiphenylamine undergoes nucleophilic substitution reactions with aluminium ions. It also reacts as a ligand with picric acid in the presence of metal ions such as copper or zinc to form stable complexes.
