2,4-Dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoic acid is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have cytotoxic properties. It is also an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting tyrosinase activity. 2,4-Dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoic acid has been shown to be effective against Gram+ and Gram- bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. This compound also inhibits the production of melanin in skin cells and can be used as a therapeutic agent for skin disorders such as melasma. 2,4-Dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoic acid can also inhibit neuronal death induced by neurotoxins.
