3,3'-Diethyloxacarbocyanineiodide is a chemical inhibitor that blocks the bacterial penicillin-binding protein (PBP), which is an enzyme necessary for the synthesis of peptidoglycan. 3,3'-Diethyloxacarbocyanineiodide has been shown to be effective against gram-positive bacteria and has the potential to be used as an antimicrobial agent. This compound inhibits protein synthesis in cells by binding to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and inhibiting DNA replication. 3,3'-Diethyloxacarbocyanineiodide can also inhibit cell proliferation by inducing apoptosis.
