4,5-Dibromo-2-furaldehyde is a reactive compound that can be synthesized by the debromination of 2-bromofuran with butyllithium. This process requires an irradiation source, which can be generated through exposure to sunlight or UV light. The chemical is then reacted with ethylene acetal and chloride in a two step process in order to form 4,5-dibromo-2-chloroacetaldehyde. It has been shown that this chemical is reactive and can react with an ethylene molecule to form an ethylene acetal. This reaction can also occur between 4,5-dibromo-2-chloroacetaldehyde and butyllithium to produce the desired product, 4,5-dibromo-2-(ethoxycarbonyl)furaldehyde.
