2-Diphenylacetyl-1,3-indandione-1-hydrazone is a colorless solid that has been used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. It reacts with primary amines to produce aldehydes and ketones. 2-Diphenylacetyl-1,3-indandione-1-hydrazone is also used in the detection of acetaldehyde by measuring the rate of oxidation at pH 5.0 or 6.0. This compound has low detection levels and can be used to monitor enzyme activities in meat products. The presence of acetaldehyde is detected by a fluorimetric assay, which uses acid as a catalyst for the reaction. 2-Diphenylacetyl-1,3-indandione-1-hydrazone enhances these reactions by acting as a competitive inhibitor with an electron acceptor such as oxygen or hydrogen peroxide.
