2,6-Dichloro-3-nitrotoluene (2,6-DNT) is an aromatic hydrocarbon that has been shown to have a strong inhibitory effect on bacterial growth. 2,6-DNT was found to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase in the biosynthesis of cell membrane lipids. It inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids and sterols by inhibiting enzymes such as acyl carrier protein and 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A reductase. 2,6-DNT also induces changes in the morphology of bacteria such as inhibition of cell division and elongation.
