4'-Decyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbonitrile is a sterically bulky monolayer molecule that exhibits long range homologous interactions. It has been shown to have a phase transition temperature of ˜130° C., as well as an activation energy of ˜30 kcal/mol. It also shows photocatalytic activity in the presence of ultraviolet light and can be used to detect molecular level changes in materials. 4'-Decyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbonitrile is found in liquid crystals with a viscosity of about 10cP and a strain value of about 0.5%. This molecule is not soluble in water, but does dissolve in solvents such as chloroform or alcohols.
