5,5-Dimethyloxolan-3-one (DMO) is a hydrolytic cleavage product of the polyunsaturated fatty acid linoleic acid and may be found in oils and fats. DMO is an isomer of 5,5-dimethyloxohexanoic acid, which has a catalytic effect on the conversion of propylene oxide to cyclopropane carboxylic acid. The reaction can also be performed with hydrochloric acid as the catalyst. In addition to its use as a precursor in organic synthesis, DMO has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis.
