2,4-Dihydroxybutanoic acid (2,4-DB) is a fatty acid that is generated from the catabolism of glucose. It can be used as an alternative to 2,4-diaminobutyric acid in individuals with a deficiency in the enzyme glutamate dehydrogenase. 2,4-DB has been shown to have a protective effect on neurons and astrocytes by increasing glutamic acid uptake. It also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases. This compound may also play a role in neuronal development due to its structural similarity to gamma-aminobutyric acid.
