3,3-Dimethyloxetane is a colorless liquid. It reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropene and hydrogen chloride. It has been used as a model for the study of brominated oxetane compounds in Covid-19 pandemic, which is a cationic polymerization reaction between an oxetane and 1,4-butanediol. The crystal structure of 3,3-dimethyloxetane was determined by x-ray crystallography. This compound can be used as a monosubstituted ether that has a dipole moment. The reaction mechanism of 3,3-dimethyloxetane involves the formation of an intermediate carbocation that is stabilized by electron withdrawing groups on the ring.
