Delafloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Delafloxacin has shown clinical use for the treatment of gastrointestinal-related infections caused by staphylococcus bacteria, such as traveler's diarrhea. The drug was found to be well tolerated in clinical trials and it is an effervescent formulation that can be dissolved in water or other liquids. Delafloxacin meglumine is an impurity of delafloxacin that is not expected to have any therapeutic effect on its own.
