Disperse Yellow 7 is a synthetic organic compound that belongs to the class of azobenzene. It is used as a dye in paints, plastics, and paper. Disperse Yellow 7 can be used for the treatment of wastewater from biological sources. Disperse Yellow 7 has been shown to be effective in reducing concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in effluent water from sewage treatment plants and other biological sources. The mechanism by which this occurs is not well understood, but it may involve the formation of hydroxyl groups on the molecule that are then able to react with dissolved oxygen (O2) in the water. This reaction produces higher energy molecules that are more likely to react with other substances found in wastewater, such as nitrate (NO3-), ammonia (NH3), or phosphate (PO4). The reactions that occur when Disperse Yellow 7 reacts with these substances produce lower energy molecules or ions that are less reactive than those found before treatment. This process is called "de-activation" and
