2,5-Dimethyltetrahydrofuran (2,5-DTHF) is a carbonyl compound that is produced by the oxidative decarbonylation of 2,5-dimethylfuran. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacterial strains including Streptococcus pneumoniae and Bacillus subtilis. 2,5-DTHF has been proposed as a possible inhibitor of methanol oxidation in biofuel cells. 2,5-DTHF is also believed to react with boron nitride in the presence of water to produce hydrogen gas. The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet fully understood but it may be due to an intramolecular hydrogen transfer from one hydroxyl group to another.
