Desacetyl famciclovir is a prodrug of famciclovir, which is an antiviral agent. It is a synthetic analog of acyclovir that has been shown to be effective against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. Desacetyl famciclovir can be administered orally or intravenously, with peak plasma levels achieved in three hours and a half-life of seven hours. The drug is metabolized by the liver into its active form, which inhibits viral DNA synthesis by interacting with the viral enzyme thymidine kinase. Desacetyl famciclovir has also been shown to have antipsychotic properties, which may be related to its ability to block dopamine receptors in the brain.
