Desdiacetyl-8-oxo famciclovir is a hydroxylase inhibitor that blocks the conversion of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydrofarnesyl diphosphate to xanthine. This prevents the production of uric acid, which is necessary for the synthesis of nucleic acids, proteins, and other important substances in the body. Desdiacetyl-8-oxo famciclovir has been shown to inhibit xanthine oxidase and molybdenum hydroxylases in human liver cytosol. It also inhibits guanine derivative hydroxylases, such as guanine or aldehyde oxidase.
