1,3-Dibenzyldihydro-1H-furo[3,4-d]-imidazole-2,4-(3H, 3aH)dione is an intermediate in the production of a variety of organic compounds such as industrial solvents and pharmaceuticals. It can be used to synthesize alkali metal salts and borohydrides. This compound is also used to reduce other organic compounds by using sodium or potassium metal as the reducing agent. Reduction of 1,3-dibenzyldihydro-1H-furo[3,4-d]-imidazole-2,4-(3H, 3aH)dione with sodium in ethanol yields 1-[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]piperidine dihydrate. The reduction reaction occurs in acidic environments like aqueous solutions containing hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. 1,3-D
