Diethylamine is a colorless liquid with a sweet, ether-like odor. It is soluble in water and alcohols. Diethylamine reacts with nitrite to form an adduct that has been shown to be protonated and to have profiles similar to those of nitric oxide. This adduct is cytotoxic and can cause significant blood pressure reduction. The compound type of diethylamine (nitric oxide) adduct is not yet known, but it has been found to have antigenicity that stimulates the inflammatory response.
