N,N-Dimethyl-3-nitroaniline is a colorless crystalline solid that is soluble in water and has a molecular weight of 202.2 g/mol. It can be used as a chemical intermediate for the production of picric acid, which is used in the manufacture of explosives. The nitro group on this compound can react with other compounds to form new compounds. It can also be used as a surfactant, protonating at alkali pH and chlorinating at acidic pH. N,N-Dimethyl-3-nitroaniline is not hydrolyzed by alkalis but can be hydrolyzed by abiotic means such as sunlight or heat.
