(-)-O,O'-Di-p-toluoyl-L-tartaric acid is a chemical compound that is used in the synthesis of tofacitinib citrate. It is made by reacting sodium nitrate with an asymmetric synthesis, which yields an enantiomerically pure (-)-O,O'-di-p-toluoyl tartaric acid. This chemical structure can be hydrolyzed to produce (-)-L-tartaric acid and butyric acid. The synthesis of this chemical compound was first reported in 1873 by Heinrich Caro and Friedrich August Kekulé.
