L-DOPA is a catecholamine that is used as a drug to treat Parkinson's disease. It is a precursor of dopamine, which is synthesized in the brain and transported to the nerve endings where it acts as a neurotransmitter. L-DOPA is also used as an active substance in many clinical tests, including assays for tumor diseases, dopaminergic drugs and affinity measurements. L-DOPA ethyl ester hydrochloride has been shown to be effective in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, while its high affinity for dopamine receptors makes it useful in the study of these receptors. The L-DOPA ethyl ester hydrochloride molecule can be hydrolyzed by esterases to release free L-DOPA, which has a lower molecular weight than its ester form. This property can be exploited for use in microdialysis studies on dopaminergic neuron activity.
