4-(Difluoromethoxy)benzoic acid is a colorless crystalline solid. It is an anion with the chemical formula CF2O2COOH. The industrial production of 4-(difluoromethoxy)benzoic acid is based on the reaction of benzoic acid and chlorodifluoroethane, which is an alkylating agent. The industrial process involves recrystallizing the product from water and activated charcoal to remove impurities and then purifying it by fractional distillation. 4-(Difluoromethoxy)benzoic acid can be reacted with a variety of electrophiles to produce different products. For example, when reacted with phenylmagnesium bromide in ether, it produces phenylacetaldehyde dimethyl acetal (PADMA). This reaction takes place in high yield and without any side reactions.
