Diethyl (hydroxymethyl)phosphonate is a phosphorus-containing chemical that has been shown to be effective in binding to viruses. It can also be used as an inhibitor of the phosphite. It has significant cytotoxicity, and it is a potent inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The compound binds to the hydroxy group on the phosphate backbone of HIV-1 RNA, preventing its replication. Diethyl (hydroxymethyl)phosphonate has been shown to be effective against other ester compounds such as glyphosate, which is used in weed killers. It also inhibits nitrogen nucleophiles such as amines and nitriles, organic solvents like alcohols, ethers, and thiols, and monomers like acetylene.
