Diethoxyacetonitrile is a conjugate of diethylcyanide and nitrile. It is a colourless liquid with a sweet smell and mild taste. Diethoxyacetonitrile is used as an inhibitor in organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals. Diethoxyacetonitrile inhibits the beta-lactamase enzyme, which is involved in the breakdown of penicillin antibiotics, and has been shown to be effective against inflammatory bowel disease. Diethoxyacetonitrile also forms imine salts with azides, which are used for the synthesis of functionalized proteins for use as drugs or diagnostic reagents.
